Lamb raises concerns over future of mental health care units

3.37.02pm GMT Thu 5th Feb 2004

After receiving letters from constituents, Norman Lamb, the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, has written to the Chief Executive of the Norfolk Mental Health Care NHS Trust over concerns that they may close three mental health care units in Norfolk including Rebecca House in North Walsham.

"I have requested clarification of the Trust's intentions," said Norman Lamb.

"At a meeting at Rebecca House on 1 February, people were informed that the facility will be closed in the next eighteen months. I believe that the Mental Health Care Trust currently has a deficit of £1.8 million. This appears to be another consequence of the substantial 'black hole' in the Norfolk NHS economy, which I have raised with Ministers in the recent past.

"Rebecca House does a wonderful job in looking after people with dementia. This should not be jeopardised. The needs of patients must remain paramount."
