Norman Lamb cautiously optimistic following government response on biofuels

5.27.12pm GMT Tue 16th Nov 2004

Following his question to the Secretary of State for Transport, Alastair Darling, in the House of Commons today, Norman Lamb is cautiously optimistic about the government's commitment to biofuels.

Norman Lamb asked the Secretary of State to put pressure on the Chancellor to specifically mention the biofuels industry in the Pre-Budget Report which will be published on 2nd December.

"Greenhouse gas emissions are still rising, despite the government's commitment to make transport policy more environmentally friendly," Norman Lamb commented on leaving the House today.

"The obvious area for investment now is in biofuels," said Mr Lamb. "An increase in biofuels would not only be good for the environment, it would also be good for local industry."

"The government's response today makes me more optimistic after the Minister hinted at new announcements in the near future," Norman Lamb added. "However, until we see a concrete commitment to the biofuels industry in the Pre-Budget Report, my optimism remains very cautious."
