NICE PROCESSES IN NEED OF REVIEW FOLLOWING ALZHEIMER'S DRUG RULING - LAMB

11.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 10th Aug 2007

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb today welcomed the High Court ruling that the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) should reassess its guidance on whether certain anti-dementia drugs should be funded by the NHS.

Commenting, Norman Lamb, who is also the Liberal Democrat health spokesperson, said:

"This welcome landmark ruling is of fundamental importance.

"The ruling represents a serious challenge to NICE's processes. NICE must now take a serious look at how it reaches these critical decisions that affect so many people's lives.

"The Health Secretary needs to have urgent discussions with NICE to ensure that lessons are learnt from this debacle, which has caused so much distress to sufferers and their families.

"We shouldn't underestimate the impact these drugs can have to alleviate the suffering of people with Alzheimer's."
